Fremont, Veronica Mary Durichek-Amy Resident Of "Ronnie"

May 15, 2008

Passed away May 14 at Washington Hospital in Fremont from natural causes. She was 63 years old. She is survived by her brother John Durichek and his wife Marie in Salinas, grandnephew Guy in Maine and grandniece Dannielle in Kansas. She was also an "Auntie Mame" to her great-grand niece Elsa and great-grand nephews Sebastian and Tyler. Ronnie was born and raised in Philadelphia and after becoming an X-ray Technician, went on to become a technologist in Nuclear Medicine. In that capacity, she served two tours of duty on the hospital ship HOPE, one in Tunis, Tunisia and the other in Jamaica in the West Indies. Returning to Philadelphia to work she soon had the itch to travel again. She got on the bus and started to cross the U.S. visiting people (Hopies) with whom she had sailed on the HOPE. Eventually she arrived in Mountain View to visit her brother and within 48 hours of arrival, Ronnie had a job at San Jose Hospital. She had a brief marriage, most noteworthy in that it resulted in her relocating to Fremont and starting to work in Nuclear Medicine at Washington Hospital. She worked there until her medical retirement. Ronnie first attended an AA meeting in 1978 and it was a turning point in her life. The friendships and bonding within her AA group lasted the rest of her life. She was a parishioner at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, served on the parish council and sang in the choir. In retirement she went back to school and received an AA Degree in Religious Studies at Dominican College. Refusing to be slowed down by her physical limitations she continued to travel with friends as long as she could. On the lighter side she also was a member of the local Ladies Red Hat Society. Ronnie was a true force of nature, drawing people of every creed, race and class into her orbit. Her motto was "Be Happy, Joyous and Free" and she lived her own life "con brio" with dash, sass and great élan. She was gifted by God with the talent to make and keep lifelong friends. She - and her hats - will be truly missed. Family and friends are invited to attend a rosary Friday, May 16th at 7:00 PM with viewing at 6:00 PM held at Berge-Pappas-Smith Chapel of the Angels 40842 Fremont Blvd, Fremont, CA Fremont. A Mass of Resurrection will be held at Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Niles on Saturday, May 17th at 9:00 AM. Since Ronnie is allergic to flowers, the family requests that any donations in her memory be made to Project HOPE 255 Carter Hall Lane, Millwood, VA 22646 or a charity of your choice.
