ABILENE, Texas - The Cal State University East Bay baseball team saw its season end Friday in the NCAA Division III West Regional at McMurry University in Texas. The Pioneers dodged elimination with a 6-4 win over La Verne in its opening game, but they fell to No.5 Trinity for the second time 9-5 in the nightcap and were eliminated from the regional.
Trinity advances to play top-seeded Chapman in the championship game today. Cal State (28-16) trailed the entire way, falling behind by as many as six runs after Trinity (25-14) put up a four-spot in the top of the fifth inning. Cal State tried to scratch its way back in the game, scoring three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to cut the deficit to 9-5.
Cal State loaded the bases in the ninth with no outs, but a double play and fly out ended the game.
Steven Roll powered the Pioneers into the second game on Friday, tossing eight-plus innings en route to Cal State's victory over No.6 La Verne in the early afternoon game.
Cody Hazen earned his 11th save, striking out La Verne's Mark Larini with the bases loaded and two out in the ninth inning. Roll scattered nine hits and allowed four runs - two earned - and struck out three.
Mark Marelich's lone hit of the day - a two-run single in the sixth inning - proved to be huge as it provided a three-run cushion for the Pioneers. A lead Cal State would not relinquish.
