Mercy's Wong second in CCS all-around

Samantha Wong from Mercy High in Burlingame and Amanda Walbridge from Burlingame High finished second and third, respectively, in the all-around competition at the Central Coast Section gymnastics championships Thursday at Gymtowne Gymnastics in San Bruno. Wong won the vault at 9.775 and finished second in the uneven bars with a 9.65 routine. With a 9.30 balance beam score and a 9.60 in the floor exercise, she finished with a 38.325 all-around score, just behind Gunn's Miranda Der, who won the competition with a 38.550 score.
Walbridge tied with Kelsey Hoag from St. Francis for third with a 37.525 all-around score. Top finishes for Walbridge were a third in the uneven bars (9.625) and a sixth in the balance beam (9.55).
Mercy finished fourth in the team competition with a 161.975 score. Besides Wong, Cristina Barraza, Rebecca Natwick, Caroline Rogan and Kayla Strom competed for Mercy. Strom was eighth in the all-around with a 37.175 score and fifth in both the uneven bars (9.525) and the balance beam (9.575).
In the field of 64 competitors, Natwick was 21st in the all-around (34.10).
Also competing at the tourney for Burlingame were Zoe Angelopulo, Sarah Farney, Amelia Kraus and Michelle Wantuch. Angelopulo finished 24th in the all-around (33.825).
Badminton
Nour AbuDamous from Burlingame High and Jordan Harris from Woodside won the singles championships at the Peninsula Athletic League Ocean Division competition that concluded Thursday at Woodside High.
AbuDamous downed Sequoia's Amalia Personius in the girls final 15-3, 15-11 after earning a 11-15, 15-3, 15-1 semifinal win over Capuchino's Lorraine Li. In the boys final, Harris battled Terra Nova's Devin Caceres in the championship match 15-12, 17-15.
In the girls doubles Woodside High's Kealani Kitaura and Jen Lee took the title with a 15-4, 9-15, 15-10 win over Kimberly Lin and Kelly Lui from Crystal Springs Uplands, while Greg Balck and Grahme Brunst from league round-robin champion Terra Nova edged Chris Fung and Alex Boyd from Crystal Springs in the final game 7-15, 15-9, 15-7.
Matt Fong and Jenny Yip completed an undefeated season against PAL Ocean competition with a 15-3, 15-4 mixed doubles win over Du Nguyen and Kristy Sayavong from Sequoia in the final game.
At South San Francisco High, the Peninsula Athletic League Bay Division badminton finals concluded Thursday with Jackie Liao from South San Francisco winning the girls singles title with a win over Jessica Wong from Mills. Stanley Hui from El Camino came out of the loser's bracket to take the boys singles title with two wins over Long Chung from South San Francisco.
In boys doubles Perry Li and Adrian Pan from Mills won the PAL Bay title, while Gary Wu and Joey Yu from South San Francisco took the mixed doubles title.
The PAL Ocean and Bay championships conclude today at Woodside High. Winners will advance to the Central Coast Section championships next week.
